FROM PASTOR KEITH:
One of the most amazing stories in the
inerrant Word of God is found in I Samuel 17, the story of David and
Goliath. Now Goliath was a literal giant and we know from
elsewhere in scripture he was not the only one. But through faith
in an awesome God David was able to defeat Goliath and change the
course of Israel’s history. But as I studied through that chapter
it hit me that to the soldiers that were present with David that
giant seemed impossible to defeat, just like the giants in our
lives. It is my firm belief that God wrote this chapter not to just
tell a great story of how a little shepherd boy through faith was
able to defeat a giant. But that God wrote it to give us the tools
for us to deal with the giants in our life.
Just as David had to conquer a literal
giant in his life so you have to conquer giants in your life as
well. Now your giants will probably not be physical but instead
physiological or emotional but yours will be just as big and every
bit as overwhelming as the giant that David and the Israelites
faced. How many of you are facing problems that are so gigantic
that they overwhelm you? Let me try to guess on your giant. Maybe
your giant is that you are addicted to the approval of others. If
anyone offers the slightest criticism you are devastated. And if
you are not constantly getting the pats on the back you feel
discouraged and rejected. Your giant is addiction and you are
addicted to the approval of others. Or maybe your giant is grief.
You lost the job of your life, the love of your life, a parent or
child, your youth, or even your health. You lost it and it or they
are gone and you just can’t seem to get it behind you. So the giant
of depression and discouragement is there to great you when you get
up in the morning and it tucks you in bed at night. Maybe your
giant is fear. You are afraid of everything. You are afraid of
people, circumstances, the world in which you live. You’re afraid
you are going to lose your health or your income and you won’t have
enough to live on. You are afraid something is going to happen to
your kids. You are afraid because of the choices they are
making. And the list is endless. Your giant is fear and you live
in that giants shadow day and night.
My point is that anything can be a
giant in your life. One person’s giant is another person’s midget
but it is very real to you. I am here to tell you that the God who
helped David defeat the giant of his day is the same God that lives
today and whom we serve. And the principles that guided David are
just as true in our day and are just as available to you as to
David. I encourage you to listen to the series on Giants, and see
how it changes your life.
